Devil May Cry DVD-Rom Photoshop Tutorial

Devil May Cry DVD-Rom Photoshop Tutorial

This tutorial will cover the basics of creating a standard DVD from nothing but a blank canvas. I will explain every step as detailed as I can but you will have to pay close attention to all steps if you’re hoping to follow this tutorial through to the end. However, there are multiple points you can branch off and do your own thing if you prefer.

Editor’s note: I have decided to include image previews to lessen the space taken up by the full blown up images. Just click on a preview and you will be able to see the correct sized screenshot.

  1. To begin with, create a brand new document. File > New… with a Transparent background and both the width and height set to 500 pixels.
  2. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the panel to the left of the work area, hold your shift key and drag your circle and fill roughly 90% of the canvas with it. Holding shift will ensure the diameter is the same all the way around. Centre your Circle with the Move tool if need be.

  4. With the circle outline still selected, go to Filter > Render > Clouds and your circle should hopefully be the only item filled:

  6. Press CTRL + J to create a duplicate layer for us to work with. Once you have done that, hold your CTRL key and tap your new layer in your layers tab, this will automatically highlight the new layer for you.
  7. Note: You do not have to rename your layers to match mine, but it would be easier for future reference.

  8. Now, go to Edit > Transform > Scale and input the following width and height alterations into the upper tool bar. Click confirm and this will reduce the size of the newer circle, and I will tell you why we’re doing that in just a moment.

  10. With your slightly smaller circle still selected, fill it in with a pure white color (#ffffff) like the preview below:

  12. Now return to your primary circle layer (or the “Outer Ring” layer if you’re using my layer names). Go to Layer > Layer Styles > Blending Options… and navigate to the Outer Glow section. Once there, use the following settings and hit OK.

  14. As you can see, the DVD is starting to take shape since we’ve added the sterling-like outer rim. Now all that’s left is to add the inner rim.
  15. Use your Elliptical Marquee Tool to create a small circle in the centre of your DVD, roughly 60 by 60 pixels if you can. Add it to a brand new layer and return to the Blending Options and assign the following settings to your inner highlighted circle:

  17. And you should have something that looks like the image below (bear in mind that I have magnified the area we are currently working on):

  19. Now we’re going to make an even smaller circle within the small circle we just created (sound complicated? Don’t worry it will become apparent soon!). Follow the previous few steps to create your smallest circle yet, and apply the following Layer Styles:

  21. And you will be left with this:

  23. Your DVD should now hopefully look like the below image.

  25. Now that you are capable of laying down the foundation that will be your DVD-Rom, I highly advise that you experiment and implement something along the lines of your favourite movie or a dream video game. I tried my hand at a Devil May Cry 4 disc cover and I think it turned out pretty well. But just to straighten something out… Devil May Cry 4 will not be appearing on the Playstation 2! I just added the PS2 logo since I had all the tools at hand and I’m not all that familiar with the Playstation 3.

Anyway, here’s my final designs. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. :)
